Due to the current situation with the Covid-19 virus, the ability to use Siemens licences away from your work premises is vital to maintain productivity.

Most Siemens products provide the ability to temporarily transfer your licence to an alternative computer or allow access to a licence off site.

Important note
Please consult with your IT department and PLM/ CAD Administrator prior to making any decision or attempting to action any of the above, in order to comply with any company security policies.

The various options are outlined below:

Solid Edge

Solid Edge licences are either floating or node locked. Node locked, as the name suggests are fixed to as specific computer, whereas floating allow multiple computers to access the same licence (as long as the number of licensed products are not exceeded). Option for both types of licences are below:

Floating

Floating licences require that the computer running Solid Edge is connected to the same network as the server/ computer running the licence server. If your IT has provided a remote VPN connection to the server, Solid Edge will continue to run on the client computer off site, subject to firewall settings.

If remote access is unavailable, use the Licence Borrow Process to check out a licence from the licence server for up to 90 days. The borrow process should be performed when the computer is connected to the network, prior moving the computer off site.

Please see our guides, which cover Solid Edge 2019 and below and Solid Edge 2020:

– SE 2019: See Guide

– SE 2020: See Guide

Node Locked

Node locked licences are either cut to the SECID (2019 or below) COMPOSITE 2 (2020) or available in the cloud. Cloud licences allow you to access your licence from any computer with an internet connection, by using a valid Siemens Webkey account.

For customers with SECID/COMPOSITE 2 based licences, where an alternative computer is required to access the Solid Edge, the following options are available:

– Travel Licence (up to 30 days): See Guide

– Home Use licence (up to 6 months): See Guide

– Convert to cloud licencing: See Guide

– Reassign the node locked licence to a different computer: See Guide

Educational Resources

Those requiring access to Solid Edge resources for education, such as school children and University Students, can access the link below for further information:

Remote Desktop

For customers intending to connect to their work computer remotely using Remote Desktop Connection, there is currently a restriction applied to Node Locked licences to prevent this.

Please contact OnePLM support, who will be able to request a temporary licence to remove this restriction.

Data Access and Storage

The following document discusses the various options and considerations available when working offsite with company data.

Further information relating to Solid Edge Home use can be found in the following Siemens document.

NX

NX licences are either floating or node locked. Node locked, as the name suggests are fixed to as specific computer, whereas floating allow multiple computers to access the same licence, as long as the number of licensed products are not exceeded. We will discuss options for both types of licences below:

Floating

Floating licences require that the computer running NX is connected to the same network as the server/ computer running the licence server. If your IT has provided a remote VPN connection to the server, NX will continue to run on the client computer off site, subject to firewall settings.

If remote access is unavailable, use the Licence Borrow Process to check out a licence from the licence server for up to 90 days. The borrow process should be performed when the computer is connected to the network, prior moving the computer off site.

– See guide –

Node Locked

Node locked licences are either cut to the mac address (hostID) of a network adaptor in the computer or locked to a USB dongle.

For customers with dongle-based licences, the USB dongle and licence can be moved to a different computer: See guide

Customers who wish to move their hostID based licence to a different computer should contact OnePLM support to discuss.

Teamcenter Visualization (Standalone)

The Teamcenter Visualization licence borrow utility allows a user to borrow a licence from the server for up to 90 days. The client machine can disconnect from the server for this period and work independently.

– See guide –

Teamcenter

A VPN connection is required to facilitate the use of Teamcenter whilst working from home from a remote client computer.

Performance is a key factor when working remotely with Teamcenter and integration products. A 4-Tier client is the preferred option, rather than 2-Tier. The other option available is to export data from Teamcenter and work offline. Please contact OnePLM to discuss in more detail.

NX-Ideas

The NX-Ideas licence borrow utility allows a user to borrow a licence from the server for up to 90 days. The client machine can disconnect from the server for this period and work independently. You should configure a standalone TDM to support this and export package files prior to leaving site.

FEMAP

Please see the following Siemens document for guidance: https://support.industrysoftware.automation.siemens.com/docs/femap/2019.1/License%20Borrowing.pdf
