Director, Barry Noble comments: “Prior to setting up our design company over 10 years ago, we were using Computervision CADDS5 as the main system and Pro E, which had become a requirement by the parent company after a buyout.”
After some consideration, Totalis Designs Ltd made the decision to look at other software solutions available on the market that would be bested suited to their needs.
The decision making process
“As well as having Computervision CADDS5 software experience, we also had previous experience of AutoCAD. We had already decided not to go for Pro/E because we found it to be a very rigid system. The drafting side of the software was particularly unfriendly and, overall, the system was not the best software to use for our needs. It was also a very expensive system.
Barry continues: “The base package was reasonable, but you had to keep on purchasing additional packages to get the system to something like we would require. This was something PTC sales people failed to explain to you at the time of the initial purchase. This may have changed.”
“We had a look at SolidWorks® and were impressed overall. It was going to be our choice until we ‘stumbled’ across Solid Edge. From the beginning we knew this was the system for us. It was flexible, friendly to use and the drafting functionality was far better than anything we had seen or used before. One of our markets was AutoCAD, converting 2D to 3D data. Solid Edge was excellent for this application. The 2D AutoCAD files convert brilliantly to do this.”
“Having worked on lots of projects, in many varied industries, we haven’t yet found an application that Solid Edge couldn’t handle.” – Barry Noble, Director, Totalis Designs Ltd.
